Troy Mitchell, a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post, told the Union County Board the post runs roughly 40 events a year and is seeking more volunteers and members as participation declines.
"We do about 40 events a year in the fall," Troy Mitchell said, describing activities that include youth hunter banquets, a Turkey Federation banquet, school-supplies collections, and a program to provide Christmas gifts to needy families. He said some events are free and others charge for meals or bar services; proceeds support charitable activities.
Mitchell said membership has fallen over the years and that younger generations are less likely to join: "Generation is not joining us," he said. He outlined outreach opportunities such as recruiting auxiliary members (relatives and family members eligible to join) and engaging local schools and service clubs for volunteer support.
Mitchell also described the post's regular fundraising and community events, including a fish fry where 10 percent of proceeds are donated to a randomly drawn local charity. Board members asked about membership fees and outreach; Mitchell said there is a membership fee but that auxiliary membership options can broaden participation.
Board members thanked Mitchell for the update. Mitchell said he plans to return with future updates on the post's schedule and contact information for volunteers.
