Council members reported progress on the new Royal Land playground (referred to in meeting as the Pelican Playground project). Councilman Asbill said the community build weekend brought volunteers and donated equipment that reduced the city's out-of-pocket costs; he said the project has more than $750,000 in labor and equipment value, while the city spent under $100 on construction to date.
Council members and staff thanked local contractors, volunteers and groups (including Chatelaine Services, city maintenance and school-age volunteers) for helping assemble play equipment and site prep. The council said the site includes an interactive Sonar/SONA feature (described in the meeting as a first in Louisiana and Mississippi) and that landscaping and turf installation remain before an official ribbon cutting and dedication in mid-November.
Next steps: Staff will complete turf installation, finalize maintenance plans and schedule a public dedication; council members encouraged residents to visit once the park is finished.
