The Harahan City Council on Oct. 16 took multiple formal actions including approving a resolution to cover local costs beyond state funding for a sewer plant overhaul, adding an ordinance on setbacks to the agenda for first reading, deferring two ordinances that need more documentation, and approving several event permits and calendar changes.
The council voted 5-0 to adopt Resolution 2025-17 committing the city to cover design and construction costs and any change orders in excess of state funding for “FPMC project 50-MC1-21-01” (an emergency sewer collection and treatment system overhaul). The council also voted 5-0 to add Ordinance 2025-16 to the agenda from the floor for first reading (an ordinance to reduce a specific setback requirement from 45 feet to 40 feet on Colonial Club). Later in the meeting the council formally introduced Ordinance 2025-16 for first reading.
On property matters the council deferred Ordinance 2025-15, a proposed ordinance to sell city-owned property at 439 West Avenue, to allow time to assemble a survey, appraisal and to resolve Jefferson Parish servitude questions; the motion to defer passed 5-0. The council also deferred Ordinance 2025-9 (annual budget amendments for fiscal year ending 12/31/2025) by a 5-0 vote to allow additional review and potential amendments.
The council approved several items related to community events and scheduling: approval for Saint Rita Parish to request city assistance for a procession on Nov. 23 (vote 5-0); approval for Saint Rita Parish to sell beer and wine at the Heron Hand Music Festival on Dec. 6 subject to Harahan Police Department detail (vote 5-0); a change to the February council meeting from Feb. 19 to Feb. 26 (vote 5-0); and a motion removing July 3 as an observed city holiday (vote 4-1). The council set a special meeting for Nov. 3 at 6:30 p.m. to consider the 439 West Avenue matter and other items (vote 5-0).
