General Dennis Tarbot and Nicole Handy, executive director of the America250 Utah Commission, briefed the Veterans and Military Affairs Commission on plans to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Tarbot said the commission aims to ‘‘educate, engage, and unify’’ by partnering with government, nongovernmental organizations and local communities to highlight civic education and volunteerism during the anniversary year. Nicole Handy said the commission’s work is organized around three pillars — educating, engaging and uniting — and that it has created six signature programs communities can adopt when planning local events.
The commission said it is recruiting cities and counties across Utah to become official partners, offering a co‑brand logo and monthly coordination so local Veterans Day, Memorial Day and other events can be tied to the anniversary. Handy said the commission is “leaning into” volunteerism and civic engagement and highlighted work such as a service event for the Sept. 11 National Day of Service in which groups assembled 500 comfort kits for military families.
Taper: Commission members noted related upcoming events, including a Marine Corps birthday cake-cutting on Nov. 10 at the Capitol Rotunda and a Nov. 6 ceremony recognizing centenarian veterans.
