The Tacoma School District Board of Directors adopted Resolution 2170, authorizing the acquisition of warehouse property at 4401 and 4409 South Orchard Street. The board carried the resolution by roll-call vote: President Schrodinger — Aye; Vice President MacKellar — Aye; Director Keating — Aye; Director Bumberg — Aye; Director Leon — Aye.
District staff said the property will be used to consolidate the district’s central kitchen, facilities shops (including procurement offices) and warehouse operations. The chief operating officer told the board the purchase is funded from the 2024 capital bond and that the acquisition will not use general funds or delay the timeline for the central kitchen. Staff indicated an expected opening for the central kitchen in fall 2027.
Officials described the site as offering additional square footage and operational efficiencies. Staff also said they are exploring potential joint operations with Tacoma Parks and other partners to reduce redundancies and maximize taxpayer resources.
The resolution was presented with a roll call and passed unanimously. Staff emphasized the purchase is consistent with prior bond planning for the central kitchen and related operations and does not alter the bond schedule.
