Morton Grove trustees give first reading to updated animal-control ordinance to define wild animals and limit ground feeding

Trustee Travis presented a first reading of Ordinance 25-28, which proposes revisions to the village animal-control code to address gaps identified by the police department.

The proposed changes would expand the list of prohibited species, establish procedures for handling and enforcement of noncompliant animals, ban ground feeding in certain circumstances, and authorize the village to require removal of bird feeders that contribute to rodent activity. "The amended ordinance addresses this gap by expanding the list of prohibited species and establishing clear procedures for compliant handling and enforcement," Trustee Travis said as he described the staff recommendation.
Trustee Travis said the police department would partner with building inspection and other village services to educate the community and ensure consistent application if the ordinance is adopted. This is a first reading, and trustees took no final action tonight.
The presentation framed the changes as public-health and nuisance-control measures meant to reduce rodent activity and clarify enforcement authority for animal-control issues.
