City staff highlights fall programming: Pumpkins in the Park, Arbor Day 'Trick or Tree', YMCA Thanksgiving partnership and Skyhawks sessions

She described this year’s Pumpkins in the Park scavenger-hunt-style promotion: participants can download a clue sheet or pick one up at City Hall, visit five parks to find pumpkins and decode a special phrase; staff provided duplicates of pumpkins to mitigate removal by animals or vandals. On that point Amy said, “So to mitigate that, this year we have duplicates. So there are about just under 30 pumpkins, but only 10 letters that you need to find.”
Amy said Arbor Day will have a new format: rather than a large volunteer planting, the city will host a “Trick or Tree” event at Donegal Park on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 3 p.m., with “native saplings to the first 30 families who attend” and a ceremonial tree planting as part of outreach for planned Donegal enhancements.
On social-services partnerships, Amy described expanded coordination with Coal Creek Family YMCA for its Thanksgiving Meal Baskets program. The city has placed a donation bin at City Hall and organized seven other collection locations across the YMCA service area to broaden collection reach; the YMCA is seeking volunteers in mid-November. Amy said the city also coordinates with summer sponsors and Newcastle Days partners to support the campaign.
Amy reported the second of three fall Skyhawks sessions is underway, flag football has been popular, and indoor soccer returns in November. She reminded commissioners the volunteer newsletter will publish Oct. 24 and encouraged liaison organizations to submit items for inclusion.
No commission action was required; staff asked commissioners to support outreach and to join planned community events.
