Kent County approves sewer-district extensions for Barrett's Landing and other subdivisions

Kent County Levy Court on Oct. 14 approved resolutions to extend Kent County Sewage Disposal District Number 1 to serve new subdivisions and properties in the Spring Creek area (Barrett's Landing) and in parts of Dover and Smyrna, after staff said there is adequate downstream capacity and the Sewer Advisory Board approved the applications.
The Barrett's Landing extension: Sam Bautista, Public Works Director, told the court the proposed Barrett's Landing subdivision on the south side of Barrett's Chapel Road would connect to the adjacent Cattail Creek subdivision and that "there is adequate capacity in the existing downstream system." John Falkowski of Becker Morgan Group spoke in support on behalf of the project. Commissioners voted to adopt Resolution 41-35, with Vice President Scott moving and Commissioner Pepper seconding; roll call recorded seven yeas.
Other extensions: Resolution 41-33 covered extensions in the Burdenwood Village area (Smyrna) and Magnolia North (Dover) covering 10 properties listed in the notice of public hearing. Garthick (Garthik) Patel, representing Shivshankar Inc., and Ron Price (former owner/operator of Blue Earl Brewing) spoke in favor of the extension for their area. County staff reported the Sewer Advisory Board approved the applications and staff recommended the hearing remain open for testimony before the vote; the court adopted Resolution 41-33 by roll call (seven yeas).
Why it matters: The extensions authorize connections to Kent County's existing sewer system, which staff said have been shown to be technically feasible and to have available capacity downstream. Those approvals permit developers and property owners to connect to county sewer infrastructure once permitting and engineering steps are completed.
