Board reviews school land trust funding, deadlines and web reporting requirements

Summary
District leaders reviewed the school land trust program, noting an FY26 distribution of just over $1 million (about $185.65 per student), required website and reporting deadlines and how schools should use the funds for academic instruction.
During the Oct. 2 meeting the superintendent reviewed the school land trust program and key deadlines with the board, including the district's FY26 allotment and the statutory requirements for public reporting.
The superintendent said the district's FY26 distribution is "a little over $1,000,000" and that the per-student figure is $185.65. She told the board that by Oct. 8 schools must update membership forms and the principal assurance form on the school land trust website; school websites must also reflect statutory requirements. Final reports for the 2023-24 year are due Feb. 1 and plans for 2026-27 are due March 20; the district study session to review plans is scheduled for April 23.
The superintendent showed the board how the state website lists planned and actual expenditures and demonstrated Longview's allocation of $62,200.72 as an example. She also noted that the district chooses not to make fall adjustments to allocations even though state rules allow districts to modify funding allocations based on fall enrollment; Murray keeps spring allocations as-is to avoid changing plans midstream.
Board members urged colleagues to advocate for the long-term protection of school land trust funding at the legislature, and some described the program as unique and important to school-level decision-making.
The review was informational; no formal board vote was taken on the funding overview.
