Kindergarten teacher urges policy committee to review ICSD entrance-age policy 5140

Nancy Braun, a kindergarten teacher, addressed the policy committee during public comment on Oct. 7 and asked for a review of Policy 5140 (entrance age for kindergarten). Braun said the policy, adopted in 2013 and reviewed in 2017, allows children who reach their fifth birthday on or before Dec. 1 of the matriculation year to be admitted.
Braun asked the committee to revisit the policy and consider recent research and professional experience about cutoff dates and readiness; she requested that the district host listening sessions and engage early-childhood stakeholders. Committee members acknowledged the request and noted the policy page already links to New York Education Law; staff said they would check those citations, consult counsel, and consider reconstituting an early-childhood advisory council that had disbanded after COVID.
Committee members agreed to place the topic on an upcoming agenda, to ask legal counsel about applicable state law and to share existing early-childhood advisory council reports that might inform discussion. Braun thanked the committee for considering the review; no Board action occurred at the meeting.
