Council authorizes school resource officer agreement with Klamath Falls City School District through 2028

The Klamath Falls City Council voted Sept. 2 to authorize the city manager to execute an agreement with the Klamath Falls City School District to provide a school resource officer for the 2026–2028 period.
Chief Dettinger described the agreement as a renewal of a long-standing partnership: "We've been partners in this program for at least 20 plus years. The only update or or change in the contract from last time is an increase in the dollar amount," he said during the meeting.
Council discussion noted that the contract covers one dedicated officer in the written agreement while operationally the district and city support two officers across schools. Councilor Russo asked for clarification about the number and the city's contribution; Chief Dettinger said the arrangement had previously been one officer with the city paying half wages, and under the last three-year contract the city agreed to pay for one additional officer so the district and city have supported two—one at Ponderosa and one at KU. The city contribution amount for the contract was stated in the meeting as $140,000.
Councilor McLaren, speaking as a parent of students in city schools, said the presence of the officer offers students “a safety net” and noted officers’ roles in training and engagement beyond patrol duties.
A council member moved to authorize the city manager to sign the agreement; the motion passed by voice vote with no roll-call tally recorded in the transcript.
