Grand Haven City Council members on July 7 announced the start of public education events for a proposed Department of Public Safety millage and encouraged residents to take part in facility tours and informational sessions beginning July 16.
Ashley, a city staff member who presented the item, said the city plans more than 20 public education opportunities tied to the proposal and listed guided facility tour times on July 16 as 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Ashley told the council that detailed information and ongoing updates are available on the project website, grandhavenpublicsafetymillage.org, and said the city has been updating that site with new material based on community feedback. “Weve gotten a lot of really great feedback from community members and weve taken a lot of time and care to make website updates and modifications to try to get as much possible information out there, to educate the public,” Ashley said.
During the second call to the audience, a resident identified only by the address 400 Lake asked council to post a comprehensive listing and timing of the millage expenditures on the project website so residents can compare the spending plan with the total millage amount. Council members acknowledged the request and reiterated the schedule of public sessions.
Council members also used their reports to flag two July events related to public outreach and local history: a Potters Field signage dedication scheduled for July 16 that will include speakers and the unveiling of memorial signage, and the Nora annual fundraiser on July 15, which council members described as a community fundraiser supporting parks and family programs. Councilmembers encouraged residents to attend the tours and outreach sessions and to consult the project website for details.
No formal council vote was recorded on the millage at the July 7 meeting; the session focused on outreach and public education planning.
