Ottawa County Road Commission presents countywide maintenance, millage and transit coordination update

Field Reichardt, a member of the Ottawa County Road Commission, presented to the Grand Haven City Council on June 16, describing county road operations, the road commission budget and potential regional transit coordination.

Reichardt said the county commission was founded in 1911 and now maintains more than 1,700 miles of roads; the commission’s budget is nearly $68.1 million, with roughly $47 million spent on road and bridge improvements and about $7 million on capital outlays such as equipment. He noted that Ottawa County voters last August approved a 10-year millage of 0.4578 mills and that Grand Haven residents received $397,576 from the county road millage in 2024; Reichardt said that amount would be higher in the current year.

Reichardt said the Road Commission works with county public utilities on water and wastewater issues and that the day is coming when the Northwest Ottawa Water System will need expansion. He also described efforts to explore low-cost regional transit connections between the Muskegon area and communities including Grand Haven to address commuter flows on US-31.

Councilmembers thanked Reichardt for making the report in person. Reichardt said the road commission would welcome periodic meetings with city officials and offered county road maps to council and the public. Council members asked staff to ensure lines of communication between the Road Commission crews and the city Department of Public Works were clear for maintenance coordination.
