The Grand Haven City Council on June 16 authorized staff to submit an application for a Safe Streets and Roads for All grant to fund a comprehensive safety action plan for the city and committed a 20% local match of $89,000 to be spread across fiscal years 2026 through 2028.
City staff said the study would include a safety analysis, ADA transition plan and non-motorized route planning to identify improvements (for pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities) and to position the city for larger construction grants. Staff noted the plan could support projects such as Beech Tree Corridor improvements, connections along Lake Avenue and Harbor Drive, and improved nonmotorized links between neighborhoods.
Councilmember Fred moved to approve the application and the city match; Councilmember Lowe seconded. The motion passed on voice and roll-call votes (Fritz: yes; Lowe: yes; McLaughlin: yes; Maneta: yes).
Staff said the application would use consultant expertise (traffic engineers and mobility specialists) to document existing conditions, photograph and videotape key corridors, and produce recommendations the city can use to pursue federal, state or philanthropic construction funding.
