The Grand Haven City Council on June 16 approved a contract with Midwest Construction Group of Zeeland, Michigan, to renovate Salukah Field at a bid price of $534,884.76. The council authorized the mayor and city clerk to execute the necessary documents.
City staff described the work as an expansion of the existing parking lot, new dugouts with accessible areas and seating, and updated lighting. The city received a Michigan Department of Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation Fund grant for up to $293,900, which staff said will cover roughly 50% of the project cost. The project bid came in below the amount budgeted ($545,000 budgeted vs. $534,884.76 bid).
Councilmember Fritz moved to award the contract; Councilmember Lowe seconded. The council voted in favor (Fritz: yes; Lowe: yes; McLaughlin: yes; Maneta: yes).
Staff said work is expected to begin in the fall. The project scope must remain within the grant-approved elements; staff said small scope or material upgrades that fall within the grant approval could allow additional grant funds to be used, subject to state approval.
Council discussion stressed the age of the existing dugouts and the anticipated benefit of additional parking to support increased use of the East End ball fields.
