Evansville City loan fund overseers voted to defer three months of loan payments for Mix and Mission and instructed staff to prepare a formal loan modification and review progress in October. The panel also received a status update from staff about several delinquent loans, including two accounts now with attorneys and one judgment the city believes may be uncollectible.
Gala, a representative of the nonprofit Mix and Mission, asked the loan committee for breathing room while the organization establishes its program. “I am here on behalf of Mix and Mission. It's a nonprofit initiative that's still in the beginning stages, but carries the potential for deep and lasting impact in our community. Today, I'm asking for your consideration in pausing my loan payment for 1 year to give this much needed work the space to take root,” Gala said.
Kayla (board member) moved to defer payments for July, August and September and to have Gala return in October with a phase‑1 progress report. The motion passed; staff said they would prepare a loan modification document to memorialize the process. The presiding officer seconded the motion.
Brian (loan program staff) briefed the group on the wider portfolio. “Most of our loans are good. They're being paid timely,” Brian said, then identified specific delinquencies discussed at the meeting: Sweet Schmidt's and Professional Furniture Services have not been collected on and are matters the city may pursue with attorneys; Chelsea Fit and Connor Brown are still being pursued by counsel; Fountain View Mini and BLP Enterprise are making sporadic payments; and a judgment exists against Nikkina Brown but staff said it may be uncollectible because she lives in Florida. Brian also said two accounts had already been sent to legal and that attorneys are pursuing garnishment orders where possible.
Board members noted the city has a written delinquency policy that has not been consistently followed and asked staff to readdress and document procedures going forward. Staff said Christine (former staff) sent letters to some delinquent borrowers in February before her retirement, and that staff would follow up and provide a summary of current collection status.
Votes at a glance: The body approved the minutes of the May 23 meeting and approved the three‑month payment deferral for Mix and Mission; both motions passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
There was no further business and the meeting was adjourned.
