ISD 622 highlights spring student activities at June meeting
Summary
North and Tartan high school activities directors reported on spring events including prom, choir and theater, state athletic results and individual student achievements.
Jed Helwig, activities director at North High School, and Jake Kelcher, activities coordinator at Tartan High School, briefed the North St. Paul-Maplewood Oakdale ISD 622 School Board on spring student activities during the board’s June 24 business meeting.
The report covered a range of spring events and student accomplishments. Helwig said the North High prom at the Landmark Center involved "over 450 students." He also highlighted the school’s pop ensemble, Polar Drift, which performed locally and represented North High at the Association of Popular Music Educators national convention in Memphis. Helwig credited music director Aaron Hammerman and student-council advisors John Cheetah and Courtney Johnson for organizing events.
Helwig described spring choir, directed by Amy Johnson, and noted two state champions in adaptive (physical impairment) doubles bowling, naming Omala and Addison as winners at the Minnesota State High School League event in Brooklyn Center. He said North’s boys volleyball team finished the season 26-4 and placed fifth at state. The boys volleyball team shared moments of camaraderie with Park Center and played Saint Paul Central in the consolation match at the University of St. Thomas. Helwig also congratulated the Metro East Conference softball champions and acknowledged advocates who helped add boys volleyball to the Minnesota State High School League.
Kelcher recapped Tartan’s prom at the Mall of America and thanked advisers Beth Higgins and Jody Fisher for supervising students. He said Tartan’s spring theater production of Mamma Mia set attendance and ticket-sales records and praised theater director Kyle Schwartz. Kelcher reported that Tartan students Molly Law and Mackenzie Vang competed in a national theater competition; Law earned an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City and recently returned from that trip. He also noted that sophomore athlete Jalen Gorgren qualified for the state track and field meet in high jump.
Board members congratulated students and staff. One board member said she and another trustee had attended Tartan’s production and praised Molly Law’s performance.
