Commissioners consider moving mechanics into precinct budgets, shop reorganization and tool purchases

Erath County Commissioners Court discussed reorganizing Road & Bridge maintenance staffing and facilities on July 16, including moving mechanics into precinct budgets, budgeting for shop tools and deciding how to clean and repurpose county storage buildings.

County leaders considered a proposal to assign one mechanic to each precinct and to move the payroll and vehicle costs associated with those mechanics out of a central Road & Bridge account and into individual precinct budgets starting Oct. 1. Commissioners and staff discussed whether some heavy equipment and shared tools should remain under a central account and how to budget for shared spare parts and larger repairs.

Staff described several near‑term needs for the shop: purchase of additional handheld tools and a second set of cordless tool kits at roughly $2,500, replacement or repair of shop trailers and canopies, and better serial‑number tracking for County equipment. A shop supervisor requested one storage bay for a welder and trailer, and described using cleaned and repurposed adjacent buildings for shared storage. Commissioners asked staff to inventory existing tools and to prepare an auction or scrap disposal plan for material that cannot be reused.

Staff also raised recurring supply expenses such as HVAC filters and routine parts. Commissioners discussed ensuring a clear budget line for shared equipment and suggested a modest shared fund to cover equipment repairs and spare parts; specific transfer amounts and payroll implications were left for follow‑up work.
