Speedway reports high 2025 state assessment results; third-grade iRead final pass rate 94%, AP pass rate 72%

At its Aug. 12 meeting, the Town of Speedway Board of Trustees received a presentation of the district's 2025 state assessment results showing strong performance across grade levels and subject areas.

District staff reported that after all retest opportunities this year 94% of third-grade students passed the iRead assessment, leaving nine students who did not pass. "All 9 of those students are English learners," the elementary assessments presenter said, adding that three of the nine are also in special education and that the remaining six scored at WIDA 1.5 or lower.

The district's elementary and middle results on iLearn (Indiana's summative test for grades 3—) placed Speedway near the top among Marion County school corporations. The presenters said Speedway ranked in the top 5—% statewide in several categories: it was tied with others for top positions in certain grade/subject combinations and was 17th statewide in students passing both reading and math.

Junior-high presenters said three out of four checkpoint categories for grades 7— improved from the previous year. "Three out of the four did go up from where they were last year," Mr. Grove said while summarizing junior-high iLearn trends.

High school presenters highlighted college-readiness measures. The district told the board the junior class performed above the state average on the SAT in both math and evidence-based reading and writing. The district also reported 63% passing the biology iLearn exam and said the percentage of students earning at least one AP exam passing score before graduation has risen to 72%.

"Eight years ago ... we were able to get 25 percent of their students to pass an AP test before they graduated high school. That was the elite high schools in the state. And you can see now that we have almost tripled that," Mr. Claiborne said, citing historical comparisons to other Indiana high schools.

Presenters discussed testing changes and the iLearn checkpoint pilot. Speedway was the only building in the district to participate in the checkpoint pilot in 2024'5; the district said the state has improved item specifications and reporting for 2025'6. "The data that we got really didn't help us drive instruction after we took the test. And already we're seeing this year, that the DOE is releasing better reports," Mr. Grove said.

Board members asked clarifying questions about year-to-year comparisons and retest opportunities. A board member noted that the district intentionally keeps K' classes small and credited small class sizes and targeted instruction for the district's performance.

The presenters and board did not propose any policy changes at the meeting; the material was presented for the board's information and for questions. The district said staff and administrators will continue to use assessment data to target instruction at specific skills during the 2025'6 school year.

The board received the report and offered thanks to staff and teachers for the results.
