Spring Hill resident tells commission communications, follow-through on projects lacking

Diane Dukes Freeman, a Spring Hill resident of more than 50 years, addressed the DeLand City Commission during public comment on July 21 to raise concerns about communication and follow-through on projects in the Spring Hill area.
Freeman said she has repeatedly tried to contact city representatives and neighborhood leaders about projects in Spring Hill, including a planned basketball court, and has not received timely responses. She said meetings are poorly publicized to residents, that approved projects often do not appear to move forward, and that neighborhood safety and youth violence remain pressing concerns.
Vice Mayor Davis and other commissioners responded that staff would provide Freeman a contact, confirm meeting schedules for Spring Hill community redevelopment area (CRA) meetings, and arrange a follow-up meeting. Commissioners noted that Spring Hill overlays both city and unincorporated county areas, and that the joint CRA involves county representatives as well.
Vice Mayor Davis said staff member "Miss Dixon" can provide meeting dates and other information; she also urged Freeman to share the phone number she called so staff can investigate why messages were not received. Freeman and commissioners agreed to follow up with staff and to provide contact information so the city can respond directly.
The commission did not take formal action on the comments but directed staff to follow up and provide Freeman with information on Spring Hill meetings and project implementation.
