Erie planning department posts SALDO amendments for 30-day public comment; special meeting announced

The City of Erie planning department briefed the Historic Review Commission on July 7 about proposed amendments to the Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance (SALDO), saying the document — enacted in 1989 and not comprehensively revised since — requires updates to comply with state law and to clarify review procedures.
Planning Director Jackie Spry said the department and consultant Michael Baker International have drafted amendments that would update land development review and approval processes, revise definitions, and adjust review fees. The department will post the amendments for a 30-day public comment period, with Aug. 6 as the 30-day mark.
Public participation The department also scheduled a special public meeting Thursday at 2 p.m. in the planning department conference room to discuss the revisions. Director Spry provided an email address for inquiries: jspry@erie.pa.us, and said additional opportunities for public comment will be available at planning commission and City Council meetings and a public hearing because the changes involve an ordinance amendment.
Why it matters Director Spry and staff said the targeted SALDO updates affect landowners, developers, and residents by clarifying processes and ensuring consistency with the Pennsylvania Municipalities Planning Code. The amendments are not a full rewrite but focus on Articles 3 and 4.
Next steps Staff said the draft will be available online for review and that they will notify the public of the special meeting and subsequent hearings as part of the ordinance-change process.
