The Cedar Hill City Council on July 22 approved an employment agreement authorizing Mayor Steve Mason to execute an appointment agreement for City Manager Melissa Valdez.
Council member Hayden pulled the item from the consent agenda to publicly read and summarize Valdez’s professional background and accomplishments. Hayden cited Valdez’s certification as a Certified Public Manager through ICMA, participation in Harvard’s Kennedy School programs, completion of the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center, and leadership roles with Texas City Management Association (TCMA) and the North Texas City Management Association (NTCMA). Hayden and other council members praised Valdez’s work since joining the city.
Council then made a motion to approve authorization for the mayor to execute the employment agreement. The council voted by voice/hands; the clerk announced the motion approved. No council member recorded opposition during the vote.
The item had been removed from the consent agenda so the council could recognize Valdez’s credentials and contributions before taking formal action. The council did not amend the agreement during the meeting and gave the mayor authority to execute the document as presented.
