Chautauqua County to accept FAA funds to design upgraded airport security gates

County and airport officials said the design phase covers three new 8-by-20-foot gates with operators and keypads; total design cost is listed at $50,538 and the county’s local share at $12.64. Pacero is the engineering firm identified to lead the design work; construction will be put out to bid after design is complete.
John Mackimer, airport manager, described the locations as one gate to the T-hangars, one on the far north side of the main parking area, and one on the south side of the parking area connecting to the fixed-base operator building. Mackimer said the FAA requires adherence to published specifications and that the design phase must document the elements down to bolts and mesh selected for construction.
Legislator Johnson questioned the cost of a $50,538 design for gates similar to those at other airports, saying, “I just needed to complain about the bill.” Mackimer and Jim Cott, director of public facilities, replied that FAA guidelines and site-specific variations mean a formal design is required even for like-for-like replacements.
Committee members approved the resolution by voice vote; the meeting transcript records a voice “aye” and the chair declared the motion carried.
The county will proceed with the FAA-funded design; after design completion the project will be bid for construction. No construction timeline or construction cost estimate was given at the committee meeting.
