Taylor ISD opts out this year of allowing homeschool students to participate in UIL activities

The Taylor ISD Board voted Aug. 14 to opt out of permitting homeschool students to participate in University Interscholastic League (UIL) activities at district schools for the 2025'6 school year.
District staff briefed trustees on SB401, which allows homeschooled students to take part in UIL activities at the public school closest to their residence unless the local school board opts out. The district recommended opting out for this year, citing concerns about eligibility verification, instructional alignment, equitable use of district resources and the added administrative burden for coaches and teachers who already monitor grades, attendance and discipline for enrolled students.
Why it matters: Trustees said accountability differences between public-school and homeschool instruction and potential eligibility disputes could create inequities and additional workload for staff; several trustees said enrollment decline issues and occasional competition for positions made the question especially sensitive for athletics and fine arts.
Board action: The motion to adopt the district administration recommendation to opt out passed; recorded vote: 5 in favor, 4 against, 1 absent (motion carries). Staff said the board will re-evaluate the policy stance next year and monitor statewide implementation and guidance.
