School and county agree to fund permanent gates for elementary pickup; council OKs plan to proceed

Principal Riley Rose updated the Milford City Council July 15 on a plan, funded by Beaver School District, to install three permanent swing‑gates to control traffic for elementary pickup on 700 West.

Rose said the district has committed funding and is working on specifications with district and city staff. The plan calls for three single‑post gates roughly 14–17 feet wide at three diversion points (approximately at 300, 400 and 500) on 700 West. Gates would swing out and lock in place with a padlock or manual locking mechanism; designers are working on a manual spring/pin lock that will hold against wind.

The gates would be installed in sidewalk areas where feasible to avoid existing water lines and drainage issues; city staff noted two water mains run in the gravel strip along that corridor and that final placement will need to account for utilities and ADA clearance requirements (36 inches minimum clear width). The gates are designed to leave room for emergency vehicles and buses to pass when closed.

Rose said the project will be no cost to the city and that bids will be required. The council asked to receive updates; Principal Rose will share final specs and work with the city foreman and the district on placement and procurement. Several council members praised Rose’s leadership on student safety and signaled support for the district‑funded installation.

Council asked the principal to circulate final plans to the council by email and indicated the item will return for any formal approvals if city property easements or construction permits are required.
