Rhinebeck bottle shop asks to retain window stenciling and updated front sign; public hearing closed, decision due next month

Emma Sabia, representing Rhinebeck Bottle Shop (Rhinebeck Bottle & Wine, Last Street Square), asked the Zoning Board of Appeals on July 16 to approve replacement front signage and permanent window stenciling that she said has been in place for roughly two years. Sabia said a matching back sign had been removed at the town's request and remains down pending variance review.
Staff noted the planning board has discussed a prospective Aster Square sign master plan; planning staff told the applicant the planning board supports development of a master sign plan and recommended consideration of that effort. Planning board staff also recommended the ZBA consider the master plan in its deliberations. The sign replacement consists of the same size as the prior sign on the front facade and new window lettering for hours and a small logo.
The board had a short public exchange and heard supporting comments from a nearby business owner. The ZBA closed the public hearing, accepted photographic evidence and said it will issue a decision at its next meeting. The board said it frequently defers to the planning board on master sign plans but will proceed with its statutory review for this application; if a master plan is adopted later, the property owner may have to adjust signs to conform.
Next steps: ZBA will render a decision at the Aug. 20 meeting; the applicant was told she does not have to attend that meeting in person unless she wishes to.
