Franklin County EMS to put failing Medic 3 up for bid; four county EMS workers win statewide awards

Franklin County EMS told the Board of Commissioners on July 16 that Medic 3 has developed structural separation at box weld joints and can no longer be reliably repaired, so staff will seek bids to buy a new ambulance.
Tracy (county EMS staff) said the county initially took the vehicle to a local body shop for repairs and later to a remount shop; the repair work revealed the box was separating and rivets were popping because the bottom of the box had sagged and placed stress on the top. Tracy said the vehicle’s chassis is one of the newer ones, remounted in 2021, and that retrofitting an older box would require meeting current safety standards and would be costlier than purchasing a new unit. Tracy said county funds to cover the replacement are available and that the purchase will be brought back to the board for formal approval.
Tracy also reported that four Franklin County EMS employees received statewide recognition from the Kansas EMS Association: Laura Baker (Advanced Life Support Provider of the Year), Louise Bardwell (Pediatric Provider of the Year, cited for work on autism-related protocols and Carter kits), Jason Hudson (EMS support person of the year, noted for peer-support work) and Abigail Truman (community service award for outreach and education). Tracy said roughly 10–12 statewide awards are given and Franklin County won four.
The board received the operational update; the formal procurement for the new ambulance will return to the commissioners for authorization when bids are evaluated.
