Project update: Kearney R‑I elementary additions nearly complete; middle‑school roof and deferred maintenance still in progress

The board toured renovated spaces at Kearney Elementary, Hawthorne and Dogwood earlier in the day. Facilities staff reported that exterior work on the two‑story addition at Kearney Elementary and exterior work at Hawthorne and Dogwood is nearly complete; interior renovation work is behind the additions but is expected to finish in about two to two‑and‑a‑half weeks, with furniture installation beginning soon.
Facilities staff described several deferred‑maintenance items: replacement of flat roofs at the middle school and Dogwood (Dogwood complete; middle‑school replacement complicated by multiple utility lines and an unexpectedly thick tear‑off), HVAC units being brought online for five buildings, expansion joint work at the junior high and Southview, epoxy flooring work at Southview, installation of safety glass film (Kearney Elementary delayed because of construction dust), and playground additions at all four elementary schools. The middle‑school facade and soffit panel replacement was delayed by a manufacturing/shipping delay; installers will work after school and as the roofing contractor completes adjacent work.
Support services staff described excavation and foundation sealing at the support services building to address repeated flooding. Facilities staff also said two roof ladders will be delivered and installed at the high school in early August to improve maintenance safety.
Why it matters: The projects affect school openings, classroom readiness and safety. Some work (roofs, metal panels) is sequencing‑dependent; facilities staff said their plan is to schedule disruptive exterior work outside school hours where possible and to coordinate with the roofing contractor to avoid impacting the opening of school.
Board members thanked staff for the tour and asked that administration keep the board informed on remaining timelines and any work that could affect the start of school.
