Benbrook approves interlocal with Fort Worth ISD for four school resource officers

The Benbrook City Council on July 17 approved an interlocal agreement with Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) for four school resource officers to participate in the annual school security initiative.
Police Administrative Manager Rosie Gonzalez told council the officers handle incidents occurring on school property; during holidays and summer break the officers perform regular patrol duties. Gonzalez said FWISD subsidizes 50% of the officers’ salary, benefits, overtime and training costs. She said the city has participated in the arrangement since 1995 and the contract increased from three to four officers in the prior school year. Gonzalez said the officers primarily serve Benbrook Middle High and Western Hills High School, and the other officers rotate among the elementary schools.
During informal citizen comments, Benbrook resident and 2025 Benbrook Middle High graduate Matthew Area spoke in support of the SROs, saying they provide information to students and are not merely intimidating figures in the halls.
Council moved to approve the interlocal agreement; the motion carried unanimously.
