The U.N. spokesperson said the monastery in San Geng Township was reportedly hit by an airstrike that killed 22 people and injured at least 50 others. The monastery had been providing shelter to people who had fled nearby villages, the spokesperson said.
The spokesman said such incidents form part of a broader pattern of attacks across Myanmar affecting civilians and civilian infrastructure, and that increasing insecurity is hampering humanitarian access. The U.N. urged all parties to respect human rights and international humanitarian law.
The briefing added that one in three people in Myanmar now face acute hunger and that the monsoon season has caused flooding that compounds the humanitarian response.
