Jonesboro committee forwards ordinance to establish park rangers and citation authority

The City of Jonesboro Public Safety Committee voted to forward an ordinance to the full City Council that would add section 50-40 to the city code to establish park rangers.
Under the proposed code language read to the committee, park rangers would maintain a presence in city parks, preserve park property, ensure proper use of park equipment, provide customer service and public education about park history, and perform duties assigned by a supervisor. The draft states park rangers would enforce park rules, write citations and warnings where necessary, and would operate under the city’s code enforcement division with authority “to enforce codes of the city of Jonesboro that are authorized to be enforced by any code enforcement or animal control officer.”
Committee members asked where rangers would operate. Committee member Mister Roper said the plan is to cover roughly 30 parks across the city, to engage people in places such as volleyball, basketball and soccer facilities, and to staff parks seven days a week once training completes. The committee was told rangers were in training and expected to be ready in about one to two weeks.
The committee voted, by roll call at the committee meeting, to forward the ordinance to the full council. Roll-call responses recorded in the meeting transcript show committee members (Miss Porter, Mister Gibson, Mister McClain, Mister Miller and Mister Brey) voting “Aye.” No public comments were recorded during the committee vote to forward the ordinance.
