City to run smoke tests on sanitary sewer lines in northeast Broken Arrow

Broken Arrow’s engineering and construction staff plan smoke-testing of sanitary sewer lines in the northeast portion of the city to locate defects, the council said at its July 14 meeting.
Councilor Justin Green described the testing as a way to find cracks and other defects in underground sanitary sewer lines: "When they do the smoke testing, there's a system that will put smoke actually into the sanitary sewer systems. And anywhere there's a defect or a crack in the system, smoke will actually come up out of the ground or out of the manhole so we can see those areas that need to be, maintained or repaired," Green said.
The city said the testing will cover areas around Houston between Houston and Albany, and Lynn Lane to about a half mile between County Line and Ninth East Avenue (as described in the meeting); staff characterized this as the northeast area of the city. Officials said testing helps prioritize maintenance and extend the life of sewer infrastructure.
