Pima County honors sheriff's auxiliary volunteers for summer wildfire outreach on Mount Lemmon

The Pima County Board of Supervisors recognized the Pima County Sheriff's Auxiliary volunteers July 31 for their summer work raising wildfire safety awareness at the Mount Lemmon access road.
Supervisor Steve Christie presented a certificate acknowledging the volunteers’ work during stage‑2 fire restrictions. Captain Dan Lehi of the Mount Lemmon Fire District and Mount Lemmon homeowners association president Sally Crum described volunteers staffing a command post at Mile Post 0, handing out litter bags and fire‑safety notices to motorists and bicyclists and helping relieve law‑enforcement resources during busy summer weekends.
“We stand here in the heat and stop every single vehicle coming up the mountain during these really hot dry weekends and reminding them that they are not allowed to have campfires,” Crum said during the recognition. Captain Lehi noted volunteers’ contribution to public education is crucial in a very dry season.
The board gave the volunteers a plaque and challenge coins. The recognition is honorary; no formal county funding action was attached to the presentation.
