The Town of Lakeville’s Economic Development Committee held its kickoff meeting on Monday, July 14, at 6 p.m. at the Lakeville Police Station, and elected Laurie Driscoll as chair and Brian Soldevilla as vice chair.
The committee was reconstituted after a multi-year pause; Lorraine Carboni, the select board representative, described the group as dormant since around 2018 and said the select board expanded membership to seven seats. “I’m Lorraine Carboni. I’m the select board representative, to this committee. I’m very excited to be here,” Carboni said during introductions.
The committee’s stated charge is advisory: identify changing economic trends and resources, recommend an economic development strategy to maximize commercial tax revenue and jobs, continuously review bylaws and regulations for consistency with economic goals, and support grant-seeking and business retention efforts. Town Administrator Andy Shukwoff explained the charge includes designating appointed town officials to assist and report back to the committee.
During the meeting Brian Soldevilla nominated Laurie Driscoll for chair. Soldevilla said, “I nominate Laurie.” The nomination was seconded and carried by roll call with four recorded yes votes. The committee then nominated and confirmed Soldevilla as vice chair by roll call.
The committee agreed to meet monthly on Monday evenings, with the next regular meeting set for Aug. 11 at 6 p.m., and to confirm associate membership and room availability before that date. The meeting ended with a motion to adjourn at 6:53 p.m., approved by roll call.
The reconvened committee includes a mix of appointed representatives and at-large members; Driscoll said she brings small-business lending experience to the role. “My name is Laurie Driscoll. I am a commercial loan officer with Seed, Southeastern Economic Development Corporation,” she said.
Members said they plan to gather prior work products (surveys and a prior business resource guide) and circulate them to the new committee before the next meeting. Committee members also discussed scheduling, membership of an associate (nonvoting) member and next steps to use town resources and staff assistance to support the committee’s work.
The meeting record shows no ordinance or bylaw changes were adopted; members discussed charge and organizational matters and set a schedule for further work.
