The Shoreline City Council unanimously appointed two youth members Monday to the Parks, Recreation, Cultural Services and Tree Board.
Council appointed Nainoa Witwer, a rising junior at Shorecrest High School and a returning youth member, and Angelina Vaughn, a rising senior at Shorecrest High School and a first‑time appointee. Both students live in the Ridgecrest neighborhood and were present at the meeting.
City staff said they conducted recruitment between May 12 and June 8, working with local high schools and student networks. Staff reported two applicants this cycle; in prior years recruitment yielded higher numbers of applicants. The appointments will be effective for the 2025–26 school year and youth members are welcome to attend meetings during the summer if they choose.
Councilmember Robertson moved the appointments and the council unanimously approved the motion by roll call. The council also voted to waive council rule 2.4 A through E to permit the staff‑led interviews and reappointment process that staff said has been used in past recruitment cycles.
Council members praised the students’ engagement on local issues; staff noted one appointee has participated in a crosswalk safety effort at Ridgecrest Park and the other serves on arts and culture committee work.
