Lemont OKs $68,000 siphon cleaning under I&M Canal to meet NPDES permit

The Lemont Village Board approved Resolution R‑50‑25 to authorize cleaning and televising of a 12‑inch siphon sewer that runs beneath the Illinois & Michigan (I&M) Canal.
Clerk Charlene introduced the resolution and Public Works staff member Ralph said the work is required to satisfy the village’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. Ralph said the siphon had last been cleaned and inspected 18 years earlier and that the low bidder was Underground Pipe Solutions at $68,000.
During discussion a trustee asked whether the bid included an extra charge for tonnage; Ralph replied there would not be additional charges in the event the siphon was found relatively clean. The board approved the resolution on a motion by Trustee Snigalski, seconded by Trustee Forsley, by roll call vote.
Ralph noted, without providing further technical details at the meeting, that the siphon runs at the location across from an older structure on the canal and serves the village’s sewer conveyance under the waterway.
