The Franklin County Public Schools board on July 14 approved several construction-related payments and a change order tied to active building projects.
Trustees approved change order No. 1 for BG24331 (Elkhorn Elementary School construction) in the amount of $47,445. Officials said the change order reflects a credit for a reduced water-quality unit size and an adjusted depth on soil testing; construction staff also reported finding burn pits beneath one kitchen area that required additional work but resulted in a change order lower than an earlier, larger estimate.
The board approved invoices and pay apps related to multiple projects, including: - JRA invoice VT24331 for Elkhorn Elementary construction in the amount of $925,322.20 and related JRA amounts billed under BG23431 and BG25083 as presented to the board. - Invoice BG25083 for the Western Hills tennis courts to Musco Sports Lighting in the amount of $98,697. - Pay application approvals and invoices for BG24331 (Elkhorn) and BG23431 (auxiliary gym projects), including payout No. 14 for BG23431 in the amount of $414,008.32. - Direct purchase orders associated with BG24331 were approved as presented.
During discussion of the Elkhorn change order, a construction lead said crews uncovered burn pits when excavating part of the kitchen area and the contractor must remove contaminated soil. "When I started digging part of the kitchen area, they found, underneath the soil, burn pits," the construction lead said. The lead added that the final change order was roughly half the original quote the district had received.
Board members discussed how spoil material from excavation is being handled; the superintendent and staff said most spoils are being hauled off site and some suitable material will be stockpiled for reuse at the district's property behind the new home side of the grandstands to avoid additional hauling costs.
All motions on these items were announced as approved by voice vote at the July 14 meeting.
