The Carbon County Open Space Board confirmed plans for a conservation celebration on Sunday, July 16, from 3 to 4 p.m., and said the next open application period for the county's Open Space program is open now with a deadline of Sept. 30.
The announcement came during regular board business, when staff and members discussed event logistics, publicity and outreach to municipalities and residents. The board estimated 20 to 25 attendees and said Natural Lands will provide bottled water and granola bars at the pavilion where the event will be held. The board also said Senator Hargle is expected to attend and that several county commissioners may be present.
Board members emphasized boosting public awareness through multiple channels. Staff reported a planned press alert from Natural Lands and said the county will seek local media contacts; the board said it will seek broader reach through billboards, a short outreach video and a new Open Space Facebook page. One member said the billboard graphic will be usable on social media and the county's website to direct residents to program information.
"If you haven't registered and you plan to attend, please fill out the registration," Anna, a staff member, told board members during the meeting. Anna also confirmed the application timetable: "The next deadline is September 30." Board members said the application period had been set to open 90 days before the deadline.
Members discussed additional outreach steps including: asking board members to submit short bios and photos for a meet-the-board feature; asking staff to prepare a recurring news release template tied to the program's fact sheet; and coordinating presence at local events and municipal planning meetings to reach landowners and elected officials. Natural Lands and other partners were discussed as potential co-hosts for public communications and fair or expo table space.
The board also reviewed signage and branding. Members said 20 signs had been ordered (size described in the meeting as "12 by 80") and discussed materials and placement near intersections and lower-speed roads. Staff said the new billboard and outreach graphics were scheduled to launch imminently, and the board discussed using those graphics across Facebook and regional press outlets.
Votes at a glance: At the start of the meeting board members approved the meeting minutes from June 19, 2020 by voice vote; the meeting record shows the motion was seconded and carried by ayes (tally not specified in the record).
Looking ahead, board members asked staff to continue outreach to the county's 23 municipalities, to schedule follow-up regional workshops, and to send a follow-up email summarizing next steps and requests for board-member bios and help with on-the-ground preparations for the July 16 event.
