The Ojai City Historic Preservation Commission on July 10 identified candidates for the 2025 annual historic preservation awards and assigned commissioners to prepare biographies for each nominee ahead of the August meeting.
Staff (Maura) described the awards process and schedule: commissioners should identify candidates, prepare brief biographies keyed to criteria in the packet, then narrow finalists at the August meeting so staff can recommend the selected recipients to City Council for ratification in November or December.
Commissioners nominated the following for consideration: David Berger, for the theater restoration (annual award; criterion: preservation through restoration); El Roblar Hotel team — identified as Eric Goode, Ramin Shamshiri, Jeremy McBride and Warner Epic — for a restoration at the city entrance (annual award; criteria: preservation and interpretation); the Parsons family, owners/operators of the Gables of Ojai, for a lifetime-achievement award (nominated for grassroots preservation and interpretation); and Steven Adams (organizer of parade and Ojai Day events) as a possible annual award candidate under grassroots or community-contribution categories.
Commissioners assigned who will draft biographies and gather supporting information: Commissioner Walker agreed to prepare the David Berger biography and to assist with the Gables entry; other commissioners volunteered to contact nominees and gather bios and documentation for the August meeting. Several commissioners noted they will coordinate with owners and project teams to assemble the historical documentation and images needed for staff’s final packet.
No final award vote was taken at this meeting; the commission plans to present biographies and to vote on finalists at its next meeting so staff can prepare a council resolution and recommendation.
Provenance: nominations and assignments appear in the staff presentation and the subsequent commissioner discussion beginning with staff remarks about the award process and continuing through commissioner nominations and assignment of biography duties.
