Board hears update on roofs, HVAC and bus routes; Sweetwater project rebid after two over-budget rounds

The Monroe County Board of Education heard updates on ongoing facilities work and transportation concerns during the director of schools report.
Director of Schools Dr. Windsor said the Veil roof project’s flat-roof section is complete and has shown no leaks; roof panels are on-site and waiting for an additional roll of metal before crews finish forming and hanging the remaining panels. Dr. Windsor said the project is expected to be finished before school starts.
The board discussed the Sweetwater roof project, which has been put out to bid three times after the first two bid rounds came in over the district’s budget. Dr. Windsor said the district plans to open bids again in August and noted the district’s Sweetwater budget is $1,600,000; earlier bids exceeded that figure. Multiple board members asked whether the board needed to vote to delay award of a contract pending the bid opening; staff said the funding had already been approved but that the board would be provided a firm answer after staff review.
On HVAC, Dr. Windsor said the purchase order for air-conditioning work at the middle school and Tellico (spelled in transcript) was pulled Tuesday, allowing engineering and mechanical work to proceed; engineers have been on-site and the project had moved into preliminary construction planning, but Dr. Windsor said a definite start date had not yet been set.
Board members also raised transportation issues, asking staff to work with transportation staff (Rusty) to examine one or two problematic routes — including possible alternate drop-off locations — so the board can avoid running entire routes where not necessary. Dr. Windsor agreed to set up a transportation meeting to review options.
Several board members praised completed work at Real Veil (old building) noting new tile, landscaping and site improvements.
No formal votes were taken on the facilities items during the report; the board directed staff to review options and return with information as needed.
