A representative of the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation briefed the board on June business-development activity on June 24.
Highlights included outreach to young professionals (table at new-teacher orientation), networking and continuing-education initiatives with the Virginia Museum of Natural History, multiple site visits and business outreach (seven office and site visits in the reporting period), marketing efforts tied to local tourism partners, and ongoing talent-development forums. The representative noted an 87.6% increase in manufacturing wages in Henry County since 2004 (presented as a long-term percentage change), described a campaign called Build, Visit, Love and said staff have fielded numerous information requests from businesses.
Staff also mentioned an upcoming franchise workshop in Martinsville on July 10 and described continuing work to market local sites to consultants. The representative said a film is being finalized for locations in the county, with staff working with production on logistics.
Why it matters: The update signals continued economic development activity — recruitment and retention outreach, workforce development, and site-marketing — and cited a notable long-term rise in manufacturing wages.
What's next: The EDC will continue marketing activities, talent development forums, site visits and outreach to newly arriving teachers and professional groups.
