Eaton County Sheriff reports a busy June with multiple violent incidents and a vehicle-pedestrian fatality

A representative of the Eaton County Sheriff's Office told the Board of Commissioners the department responded to a string of serious incidents in June, including assault investigations, a vehicle-pedestrian fatality and multiple pursuits.
The sheriff's report described a June arrest for possession of cocaine following a traffic stop and an earlier incident in which deputies arrested a person who tried to spray a driver with bear spray. The office recounted a road-rage incident at Waverly Road and the Grand River Bridge in which a suspect used racial slurs, assaulted a teenager by grabbing her collar and attempted to throw her over the bridge; other passengers intervened and the suspect was arrested after resisting deputies and sustaining a self-inflicted injury in the patrol car.
Deputies also investigated retail thefts at Walmart that involved juveniles; one juvenile fought a deputy and was lodged at a youth facility. The office reported a separate domestic-related arrest for OWI and assault after two people were observed fighting in a McDonald's drive-through lane.
The report said deputies investigated a vehicle-pedestrian incident on Waverly and Tecumseh River Drive in which a man was found with severe trauma; the next day, a person called and turned himself in to report striking the victim. The sheriff's Office described a June call at a Delta-area motel where a person armed with a large knife chased people; deputies arrested the individual and determined no shots had been fired.
Other items included a pursuit that ended when a fleeing vehicle crashed into a ditch and officers found methamphetamine and heroin in the car; an apartment assault in which suspects produced firearms; a deputy rescue of a 16-year-old who jumped into the Grand River; and a June 21 disturbance at Sharp Park involving an estimated 400 people with 10—to 15 people fighting.
The sheriff's representative closed the report by saying June was a busy month and invited questions; commissioners did not request additional action during the presentation.
