Tempe Union board approves IGA amendment, consent items and selects ASBA delegate; Steele votes no on special-education funding change

Vice President Amanda Steele, who cast the lone opposing vote on the IGA amendment, said she supported the district's overall efforts but opposed the amendment because it reduced funding for programs she described as meaningful for students with disabilities. "It's just difficult to see impactful programs like TSW reduced," Steele said, adding that the district's Special Education Transition Committee is important for pathways to independence.
Board President Barraza made the motion to approve amendment number 5 to the IGA, and the board voted to approve the motion. The board recorded the final vote as 4-1, with Vice President Steele opposed.
Other formal actions and routine items approved during the meeting included:
- Adoption of tonight's agenda with item F10 removed from the consent agenda for separate discussion, motion approved unanimously during initial agenda vote.
- Approval of consent agenda items F1 through F9 and F11 through F16, motion passed 5-0.
- Approval of business services items H1 through H4 as a single vote, motion passed 5-0.
- Public hearing for the adoption of the 2025-26 expenditure budget was opened; no public comments were offered at the hearing.
