Residents, officials press Truckee Town for faster enforcement, bike/ped protections at Donner Lake

Truckee Town staff and police presented traffic data and enforcement plans for Donner Lake on a community panel, and residents urged faster action after a March pedestrian fatality.

Town traffic staff said the 85th-percentile speed on Donner Pass Road near Donner Lake has consistently measured about 40–42 mph while the posted limit is 35 mph; the measured average vehicle speed was about 36 mph. Officer Litchi said the town’s enforcement index last summer was 43-to-1, above the typical benchmark for a vacation community, and that 72% of citations in the lake area were for speed. Town staff and police described several near-term and planned steps, including additional traffic counts this summer, an active transportation plan update scheduled to begin in 2026, and a recently approved CHP grant to buy two motorcycles and three advanced speed-feedback trailers.

Why it matters: Donner Lake is both a residential neighborhood and a regional recreation destination with multiple public docks, a state park and seasonal visitor peaks. Residents, cyclists and parents said existing lane widths and parking patterns leave little buffer for people walking or bicycling and asked the town to pair enforcement with engineering changes to reduce crashes and “near misses.”
