The Sedgwick County Commission on July 9 approved a capital improvement amendment to build an outdoor, accessible exercise area aimed at adults age 60 and older next to the Boundless playground at Sedgwick County Park.
Project basics The county’s Department on Aging and Disabilities, partnering with the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS), secured a $180,000 grant to install resistance‑based outdoor fitness equipment and a shade structure. Projected costs submitted to the board were about $158,000: roughly $115,116 for equipment and shade structure from Greenfield Outdoor Fitness and about $42,000 for a concrete pad, installation and mounting. The installation will include 11 stations (design capacity for about 28 users simultaneously) with five wheelchair‑accessible stations; the shade canopy will be removed seasonally per manufacturer guidance. The county estimates annual maintenance costs after warranty at $5,000–$6,000; Parks staff will manage routine maintenance, and Aging staff will keep spare parts inventory to minimize downtime.
Why it matters The project is intended to promote physical activity and social engagement among older adults and people with disabilities. The chosen site adjacent to a playground supports multigenerational interaction. KDADS requires timely expenditure, so the county will use an existing cooperative purchasing agreement with Greenfield Outdoor Fitness to accelerate procurement and meet a Sept. 30 grant deadline; any costs incurred before final completion would be reimbursed by the grant, and remaining work would be covered by FY2026 funds if necessary.
Board action The Commission approved the CIP amendment and authorized procurement through a cooperative agreement to enable quick delivery and installation. Commissioners praised the project as an accessible, grant‑funded amenity for park users and older adults.
