Board approves $97,225 RISE curriculum materials for Oak Lawn program

The Derby Board of Education approved a three-year purchase of RISE curriculum materials and associated training for an alternative-program classroom at Oak Lawn Elementary, voting 7-0 July 7.
Dr. Holly Putnam Jackson presented the request and said the three-year cost would be $97,225. The materials and staff support are intended for a single-room program that serves students placed out of regular classrooms for behavior concerns; the purchase includes staff training days, projected support days and curriculum materials. She said the funding will come from at-risk funds (the portion of the purchase aligned with evidence-based SEL programming) and from curriculum/textbook funds for the curriculum materials portion.
"This curriculum is just for the one room at Oak Lawn Elementary that is housing students that have other not otherwise in school because of expulsion or points on the behavior matrix," Putnam Jackson said. The board approved the purchase 7-0.
Implementation will be managed by curriculum and student-support staff; the district characterized the curriculum as evidence-based for social-emotional learning and behavior supports. Trustees said they welcomed the potential for the curriculum to help students both inside and outside the program.
The administration will proceed with procurement and training plans and implement the RISE materials for the upcoming school year.
