Acting superintendent highlights community partnerships, near-complete teacher hiring and back-to-school rally

Acting Superintendent Dr. Bowman reported several community and staffing updates at the Phoenix Elementary District Governing Board meeting.
Dr. Bowman said members of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity volunteered July 1'6 during their international conference in Phoenix, reading to students at the Gable Boys and Girls Club and the Y Academy at Monterey Park. She said more than 30 fraternity members read to students, gifted the books to those community partners, and pledged to provide a book to every incoming kindergarten student next school year.
On staffing, Dr. Bowman said general-education classroom teacher vacancies are down to one open position following a resignation received the previous day and praised principals and supervisors for their hiring work this season.
Dr. Bowman also reminded the board the district's back-to-school rally is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Herrera Performing Arts Center. She noted the first day of school for the district is July 30, 2025.
Board members expressed thanks for the partnerships and the outreach to children.
