The Blue Ridge Unified School District governing board accepted a $10,000 donation from Invenergy to support Blue Ridge High School’s robotics program, with much of the funding designated for the school’s solar race car project. The board also accepted a donated Delta table saw valued at $3,000 for the district FabLab and approved several student fundraisers.
Kelly Zagzewski, an Invenergy representative, said the company develops energy projects including solar and battery storage and that Invenergy’s local project south of Joseph City led staff to identify community investments the company could make. “After spending about an hour and a half with the students...I think this will make an impact and I can't wait to see how they come out in Tucson this year,” Zagzewski said.
Fundraisers approved include student council cookie dough sales intended to support homecoming and teacher-appreciation events; a cross-country family dinner scheduled Aug. 1 in conjunction with the High Mountain Half; boys soccer sales of fan gear and field banners; and a girls soccer calendar fundraiser in which donors contribute a dollar amount matching a chosen day of the month.
Additional contributions noted during discussion include donations of jump-pit covers for track and field events from local businesses.
Why it matters: The Invenergy gift and equipment donation directly support hands-on technical programming at the school (FabLab and robotics) and the approved fundraisers provide locally raised funds for athletic and student-group activities.
