Helena residents press commission for transparency and limits on ICE cooperation after Christopher Martinez detained

Hundreds of residents and more than 40 public commenters urged the Helena City Commission on July 7 to demand answers and limit local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement after the detention of Christopher Martinez earlier this month.

The testimony came during the public-comment period at the July 7 commission meeting, where community members described emotional disruption to Martinez’s family and said local officers or county staff had shared incomplete information about the incident. “He was detained unlawfully. He was deprived from his rights,” said Maria Pacheco, Martinez’s wife, who addressed the commission about the impact on her children.

The comments followed a statement by Mayor Collins at the start of the meeting describing the city’s understanding of the events. “Helena police department was coordinating with U.S. Marshals to locate a suspect wanted for felony domestic assault with a weapon.
