West Preserve groundbreaking underway; multiple Parkland park projects move forward

City of Parkland staff on July 7 updated the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board on a portfolio of park projects, including an active groundbreaking at West Preserve Park and near-term repairs and construction across several neighborhood parks.
Christine Garcia, senior director of operational services and projects, said the contractor has cleared the West Preserve Park site and that the notice to proceed was issued. “We are looking at an approximate 19 month construction schedule, but it will take us to the end, like, November-ish of 2026 before we'll be able to go back and do our ribbon cutting,” Garcia said.
Other active and near-term projects include a Tamarind Park expanded parking project with construction documents at 90% completion and a forthcoming county roadway project on Hillsborough (previously referenced as Locks Road) that will add bike lanes and affect park access. Garcia asked board members to help spread the word about construction affecting access to Terramar Park.
At Liberty Park, staff reported the restroom remodel is nearing final inspection and will reopen after punch-list work. Pine Trails' playground has had initial safety repairs completed; additional replacement play panels and platforms are pending commission approval and will be installed after a short lead time. Garcia said replacement benches and picnic tables for Pine Trails and Terramar are arriving and will be installed by month’s end.
Tamar Park’s back playground design is finalized and staff anticipates bringing the quote to the commission in August. Garcia said the project has partial funding through a Firdap grant that will cover some design and recreation improvements but is not a 100% reimbursement.
Board members asked about tree and preserve maintenance in the nature-preserve areas and about minimizing disruption to shaded canopy areas; staff said arborists reviewed plans and invasive species will be removed and replaced with native planting where appropriate. Staff also shared monthly drone photos and will continue to provide updates.
